My bill, known as Electric utility renewable energy standard obligations modified, this legislature was pasted in 2013 to help create clean energy goals for Minneasota, the bill requires electric utilities generate all of their electricity from carbon free sources by 2040. The bill also created a new concept called “Environmental Justice” this is to ensure equitable start and completetion of the bill’s goals.
This bill and its goals are apart of a larger strategy of Governer Tim Walz and other law makers to promote Minneasota as a clean energy state committed to addressing climate change by lowering the dependance on fossil fuels and investing in renewable technologies such as wind and solar.
They are using 100% clean electricity bill (Senate File 4 and House File 7) that will commit all utilities that will be provided for Minnesota customers with 100 percent carbon-free electricity by 2040, plus the reports on benchmarks every five years. Firstly they introduced it in 2019, theier bill has been ever since updated and modified a few times to be more ambitious, robust, to have more alignment with climate science and technology advancements that their had. “Carbon-free energy” mentioned in the bill that can be produced by their renewable sources that will include solar, wind, hydroelectric, and as well as other carbon-free generation sources likely nuclear power.
