HF1150/SF1117 is introduced in the 94th Legislature (2025-2026). It is well-known that the normalized use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the rapid development of this technology have increasingly contributed to environmental degradation. This bill addresses the concern by requiring a formal study of AI’s environmental impacts. Due to the large demand of energy and water, understanding the repercussions allow policymakers to make knowledgeable decisions that balances sustainability and innovation.
Due to the bill addresses technology that is still rapidly evolving, there is concern that the data collected through this study may be inaccurate, incomplete or quickly outdated. AI is in a constant state of change, with new models and systems emerging faster than long-term environmental impacts can be reliably measured. Results from the study may not reflect future development or real-world usage, if data cannot keep up with the developing technology, the research would be void.
