H.F. 2010 would increase the age of consent from 16 to 18 in criminal sexual conduct cases were the offender is over the age of 21. There is an long list of pros to this bill, and the first is just the fact that more victims will get justice. In cases were the actor is 5 years older then the complainant, age can not be used as a defense nor can “constent”.
My personal con with this bill is that the age of conset should already be 18. In the United States you have to be 18 to access pornographic material; and you have to be 18 to purchase sexual aids. Because of those reasons I think it only makes sense for the age of conset to already be 18. In conclusion I truly believe this bill would help older victims, and jail more young sexual offenders. Peolpe can be sexual predators at any age and for too long we've let them get away with it because they're “just boys”.
