The bill I chose for model legislatureor is granting money to the Kids in Need Foundation. In 2024, $750,000 was taken from the general fund and given to this foundation, The money is used to provide school supplies for teachers and students in need.
In my opinion, passing this bill would be extremely beneficial to the students and schools of America. Not every student is fortunate enough to have the ability to afford school supplies for themselves. This bill would decrease the amount of students without their own supplies, making it much easier to learn. Students in our country are often finding themselves unequipped for the school year because they can’t afford the tools needed. This can lead to major mental health issues. How are students without the proper resources expected to learn as well as the kids that have the proper resources? Giving students the tools they need in the classroom can help them succeed. It boosts their confidence and ability to engage with their peers and teachers.
Unfortunately, it is not just students who are struggling. Teachers are too frequently buying their kids school supplies out of their own pockets. They do this to ensure that each student has access to a good education, however, sometimes it is too much for the teacher to handle. This money would also go towards the teachers who are struggling to provide for their classroom, resulting in the teachers focusing on teaching instead of paying for supplies.
When students and teachers from the same school are struggling, the school is most likely struggling as well. A school should be able to provide good learning environments and good resources, but they can’t do so if they can’t afford it. When this happens at a school, parents are less likely to send their child there because they want their child to get the best education. This lowers enrollment numbers as well as funding. The Kids in Need Foundation wants to do their part and donate money to these schools. This will allow for children to have a more positive educational experience, and in the future allows more parents to send their children there.
While everything about this bill sounds great, there are a few downsides. The biggest one is that this foundation relies heavily on volunteers and donations. This makes it extremely easy to eventually fail. If the donations stop coming in and there is no one volunteering, the foundation is left with nothing and no way to help support the education of those in need.
Even with the downsides, I think the Kids in Need Foundation is worth it. I do not think people will stop donating to this charity because it is for such a great cause and the positives outweigh the negatives.
