All the legislators should vote yes on HF0028 because the issue focused on is the bill that strips the right to vote once you are convicted of a felony. Although felons are stripped of the right to vote I believe. They should have a right to vote because the election and presidency affects them as much as it affects non incarcerated people. Just like how our former president is allowed to become president as a felon with multiple charges.
For instance prison officials automatically inform election officials that an individual's rights have been restored. Some states, such as California, require voter information be provided to formerly incarcerated people. But in Minnesota your criminal record does not affect your right to vote in Minnesota unless you are currently incarcerated for a felony conviction.
Based on what I read from my sources you can still vote if you're charged with a felony but not convicted or not incarcerated. The offender may lose some rights. But those rights vary from state to state, but they usually include the right to own or possess firearms. Or the right to vote, and the right to hold public office.
Although Denying them this right perpetuates and further isolates individuals. Who are already marginalized by their criminal convictions. Restoring voting rights encourages civic participation, and fosters a sense of responsibility to the community. Allowing convicted felons to vote strengthens democracy by ensuring that all voices.
In conclusion felons should have the right to vote because they are still a part of our system and registered as citizens and citizens have rights. Although felons are stripped of the right to vote. They should have the right to vote because the election and presidency affects them as much as it affects non incarcerated people.
