House file 2651 introduces greater penalties for assault on a police officer in the state of
Minnesota. According to Section 609.2231 of the Minnesota Statues, the going penalty is the
offender atleast three years of imprisonment and up to a $6,000 fine. Implementing further
punishment is of use in order to prevent conspiracy to conduct harm on a peace officer by
criminals. The police as a whole are here to protect citizens such as yourselves from such
offenders who could very well harm you.
However, this could backfire in the event that a peace officer is abusing their power, with
the victim potentialy receiving a negligent charge on their permanent record, ranging from
misdemeanors to a whole felony. Not only is the victim going to be a felon, thus restricting
several rights granted to them previously, but they would also outright be imprisoned,
contributing to increasing prison population numbers.
