Pro-Con essay
HF5308 is a bill that would require babysitters to have CPR and First aid training
requirements. In an article written by mycprcertificationonline titled "CPR and first aid: why they
are crucial for babysitters,” they discuss the points of why CPR and First aid is important for
babysitters to learn. A crucial point they brought up was that CPR-trained babysitters are more
employable. “Investing in CPR and first aid certification for babysitters demonstrates an
employer's commitment to child safety, making it easier for babysitters to obtain the certification
and providing peace of mind to parents who entrust their children to qualified caregivers,” the
article claims. If the parents of children can be sure that their babysitter can look out for their
child, they would be more inclined to hire him. From the same article comes an equally
important statement, that First Aid and CPR would increase the knowledge babysitters have of
medical and healthcare issues. “This training helps babysitters stay calm during emergencies,
making them more effective responders. Remaining composed allows them to provide
necessary care, make quick decisions, and act promptly to save lives. It also boosts their
confidence in handling emergency situations, whereas untrained individuals may hesitate,” the
article states. Babysitters who aren’t trained in First Aid would hesitate to jump into action in the
face of a medical emergency, whereas a well trained babysitter would know what to do and how
to do it quickly, possibly even saving the child’s life.
Some reasons people could be against this bill could be the cost. According to
mycprcertificationonline, CPR classes can cost anywhere from $14 to $100. Depending on the
babysitter's household situation, they might not be able to afford the classes. Even if the
babysitter is an adult, they could have classes or other barriers keeping them from taking the
class. However, the classes may range from $14 to $100, but the average cost (according to
mycprcertificationonline) is only $25. According to nannylane.com, the average cost of a
babysitter in Minnesota is $15.59 per hour. If you babysat for roughly 2 hours, you would be
able to cancel the cost of the CPR class out.
