1.1          A bill for an act
1.2          relating to education; integrating American Indian views on the environment and
1.3          ecology into statewide curriculum; appropriating money.
1.4          BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5          Section 1. APPROPRIATION.
 1.6                        Subdivision 1.Department of Education. The sum indicated in this section is
1.7          appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner of education for the fiscal year
1.8          designated.
1.9                          Subd. 2.American Indian environmental and ecology curriculum. (a) For the
1.10       commissioner of education to develop materials that may be integrated into curriculum that
1.11       embody American Indian views on the environment and ecology.

1.13       (b) The educational materials must:
1.14       (1) incorporate diverse educational resources, including curriculum materials and lesson
1.15       plans, videos, documents, and project guides;
1.16       (2) be developed in collaboration with American Indian experts;
1.17       (3) represent a holistic and inclusive approach to environmental education;
1.18       (4) enhance students' understanding of environmental issues;
1.19       (5) encourage project-based and service learning; and
2.1          (6) respect the deep-rooted connections American Indian communities have with the
2.2          land.
2.3          (c) The commissioner of education must consult with American Indian leaders when
2.4          developing educational materials.
2.5          (d) This is a onetime appropriation.
