The bill I chose for Model Legislature authorizes motorcycle riders to equip their vehicle with ground lights. This bill was created to increase safety and awareness for motorcycle operators. With that, it also gives more freedom to motorcycle riders for modification.
The first reason as to why this bill should be passed is because it increases the safety for motorcycle riders. The halo of light around the motorcycle increases visibility to drivers nearby, and can provide a gauge to how close drivers are. As an added bonus to extra visibility, drivers can more easily identify motorcycles and differentiate them from cars from a distance. In turn, less accidents would take place on roadways.
Whether the modifier uses LED strips, or bulbs to install ground lights, the bill states that the lights cannot obstruct, or glare into other drivers’ views. This negates a potential risk from passing this bill. This way drivers can still receive the benefits of increased visibility and awareness.
My last reason for why this should be passed is because it gives modifiers and motorcyclists more freedom. The bill gives clear explanation on how it should be done so their vehicle can stay in legal bounds. This bill balances modifiers and motorcyclists freedoms and limitations for public safety.
One downside that this bill brings is that the ground lights could be distracting to other drivers. With that, the lights could potentially be reflective off of other surfaces which could also potentially cause confusion to other drivers. However accidents from this reason are highly unlikely, as the lights will not be glaring in drivers’ vision.
My bill for Model Legislature provides many benefits to the residents and drivers of Minnesota. These benefits range from safety of the public to the freedoms of the public. Thus, this bill should be passed due to the benefits heavily outweighing the hardly apparent negatives.
